Due to an unprecedented number of master's graduates this year, Rossier held its 2012 Master's Commencement Ceremony in the expansive Howard Jones Field on May 11 to accommodate more than 700 participating graduates and their families and friends. Flag Bearers Julisa Maldonado Vargas (MAT '12) and Briana Weiland (ME PASA '12) led the processional, which included graduating candidates in Master of Education Educational Counseling, Master of Marriage and Family Therapy, Master of Arts in Teaching, Master of Education Postsecondary Administration and Student Affairs, Master of Education School Counseling, Master of Education Psychology and Instructional Technology, Master of Science Policy, Planning and Administration, and Master of Science Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages. Student Speaker Julio Cesar Ortiz (MFT '12), gave an inspirational speech about how his experience at Rossier has prepared him to heal the emotionally wounded. Ortiz implored fellow graduates to hold on to the part of themselves they discovered at Rossier "for it has the USC spirit that will never abandon you and will allow you to always fight on." Commencement Speaker Don Shalvey (EdD '95), deputy director of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and co-founder of Aspire Public Schools, gave a humorous account of the role naiveté played in his move to Merced, California in 1966 -- with the misguided belief he would be right next to San Francisco.
