Student Speaker Julio Cesar Ortiz (MFT '12), gave an inspirational speech about how his experience at Rossier has prepared him to heal the emotionally wounded. Ortiz implored fellow graduates to hold on to the part of themselves they discovered at Rossier "for it has the USC spirit that will never abandon you and will allow you to always fight on." Commencement Speaker Don Shalvey (EdD '95), deputy director of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and co-founder of Aspire Public Schools, gave a humorous account of the role naiveté played in his move to Merced, California in 1966 -- with the misguided belief he would be right next to San Francisco.
